Gravel Driveways in New Iberia, LA

Gravel Driveways · New Iberia, LA

New gravel driveways, plus regrading and fresh rock for the one you already have.

A gravel driveway in Acadiana has one real enemy, and that is standing water. Louisiana averages about 57 inches of rain a year, and the southern parishes run wetter. We build new gravel driveways and rebuild worn ones around New Iberia.

Most ground around here is heavy clay, and it drains slowly. Rock pressed into wet clay sinks out of sight, and the drive turns to ruts. So we shape and pack the base first, then set the limestone on top of it. Call (337) 201-0594 and we will come look at the drive. Estimates are free.

Why does a flat gravel driveway wash out in Louisiana rain?

A flat gravel driveway holds water in every low spot. Federal guidance for gravel roads calls for a crown of about a half inch of fall per foot. Below roughly four percent of cross slope, water stands and makes soft spots. Soft spots turn into potholes.

Tires finish the job. A tire pushes rock out of the wet spot and presses the rest down into the clay. With the rain we get here, that cycle repeats a few times a year. Cutting the shape back into the ground is dirt work and lot grading, and that is the real fix.

Regrading a washed out or potholed driveway

Most of our driveway calls are on a drive that is already there. It has holes at the low end, ruts down the wheel paths, and rock pushed off into the grass. We pull that rock back to the middle and cut the high spots down. Then we shape a crown and pack it in.

Loose rock dumped in a hole works its way back out. Water still sits in that spot, so the hole returns. We reshape the surface first, then top it with #610 crushed limestone and roll it down. Owners ask us for the same gravel driveway repair in Breaux Bridge and the small towns along Bayou Teche.

New gravel driveways and parking pads

A new gravel driveway starts with the dirt under it. We strip the grass and soft topsoil, then shape and pack the subgrade. Wet clay may need a fabric layer under the stone so the rock stays out of the mud. Where the drive meets a ditched road, it needs driveway culvert installation so the ditch keeps draining.

We also lengthen drives and add parking pads for trucks and trailers. A pad gets the same base work as the drive, plus a slope that sheds water. A back lot grown up in brush needs land clearing first, so the equipment can get in.

What drives the cost of a gravel driveway?
Length and width set the base number. Then the shape of the ground matters, since a soft or rutted base takes more work. Rock depth moves it too, and so does the haul distance for the limestone. Every drive is different, so we quote yours after looking at it. Estimates are free.
What kind of rock do you use on a gravel driveway?
Most drives here get #610 crushed limestone. It runs from about three quarter inch stone down to dust, and the dust packs the stone together. Washed rock such as #57 limestone has the fines screened out, so it drains well but rolls under tires. We keep washed stone for wet spots and ditches.
Can you fix a driveway full of potholes, or does it need a rebuild?
Most potholed drives can be regraded. We pull the scattered rock back in and cut down the high spots. Then we shape a crown so water runs off, and top it with fresh limestone. A rebuild only makes sense when the base has gone to mud or the rock is mostly gone.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway?
It depends on the road you tie into. Iberia Parish requires a culvert permit when your property has an open ditch. That goes through the parish Department of Permits, Planning and Zoning. Drives connecting to a state highway are permitted by Louisiana DOTD. Rules vary by parish and town, so check with your local permit office.
How far from New Iberia will you go for driveway work?
We cover roughly 35 to 50 miles around New Iberia. That takes in Iberia, Lafayette, St. Martin, Vermilion, St. Landry, Acadia and St. Mary parishes. We do a lot of rural drives off parish roads, including gravel driveway work in Abbeville. Call (337) 201-0594 and we will set a time to look at it.
