A house pad is a raised, packed platform of dirt that a slab sits on. Site prep starts with stripping the grass and topsoil off the footprint. Then fill goes down in lifts, spread with the track loader and packed before the next layer. We can cut and reuse dirt from the lot or haul fill in.
Acadiana clay holds water and moves with the weather. Your builder or engineer sets the pad height and the fill type. We build to that number and slope the sides so water runs off. If the lot still has trees or brush on it, land clearing comes first.
Two things usually cause it. The ground is low in spots, so water has nowhere to go. Or the yard slopes back toward the house instead of away from it. Heavy clay makes both worse, because water sits on top instead of soaking in.
We fix it with yard leveling and grading. Low spots get filled and packed. The rest of the yard gets reshaped to fall away from the house toward a ditch or the road. When water needs a way under a drive, that is culvert installation.
Much of Acadiana sits in a mapped flood zone. In those areas the rules set a minimum height for the lowest floor of a house. New Iberia's flood ordinance uses the base flood elevation plus one foot. Lafayette Parish sets the same one foot rule for dirt work in Lafayette.
A licensed surveyor or engineer shoots those elevations. We build the pad to the height they give you. Lafayette Parish also asks that fill placed in the floodplain be offset with equal storage. Once the pad is set, we can cut in a gravel driveway to reach it.
